A covered 40 yard to 500 yard rifle range, a reloading room, as well as a bow range, is available free of charge to guests of The BigWoods. It is strongly urged that visiting shooters use this rifle range to be sure that the rifle is still on target after making the trip to The BigWoods. We strongly recommend not shooting at running animals as well.

As far as boar hunters are concerned it has been our experience that hunters have the most success bringing a small caliber center fire rifle for hogs instead of the “elpehant” guns we often see used in this endeavor. We strongly suggest that you attempt to make head shots on hogs; shooting at a running boar is discouraged.

Out of state boar hunters will need to purchase a non-resident special 5 day hunting license from Texas Parks and Wildlife. This may be purchased by going online to the following URL (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/business/licenses/public/recreational/) or from the Tennessee Colony General Store which is only 7 miles from the BigWoods.

Predators:  All predators, including mountain lions (I previously did not allow this as I think they are a cool apex predator, but the evidence is mounting that they selectively kill large bucks, which tend to stand and fight rather than run away as the other deer wisely do.), can be taken free of charge by any BigWoods hunters who has booked a buck or a boar hunt, i.e., doe hunters do not qualify for free predators.

This year the Texas Parks and Wildlife has changed the rules so that you do not even need to use your own deer tags for buck or doe hunting at The BigWoods; you simply need a Texas Hunting License and our managed lands permit.  Our deer season runs this year from October 1, 2010 - February 28, 2011.

BigWoods 4 wheeler policy: The BigWoods is a paradise for ATV riders with over 100 miles of roads through some of the wildest places in Texas. We encourage hunters to bring their own ATVs as this affords them access to this amenity as well as giving them more independence as to when they come and go hunting. However, four-wheeling is subject to the follow BigWoods’ rules:

1.  Hunters are not allowed to drive by other hunters when the hunt is on. This is common courtesy. Our staff will always be able to tell you where all the hunters will be. If one party has exclusive reign over the BigWoods then this can be worked out amongst the hunters in your own group, otherwise check with our guides prior to setting out on your own.

2.  Mud dogging is not allowed. We have made a great investment in our road system here and take great pride in the quality of it so please be warned that mud doggers shall be drawn and quartered. Nuff said?

A deposit of $200 is required for a boar hunt, $200 for a doe hunt and $400 for a deer hunt. These deposits are non-refundable not refundable, though they can be applied in full towards a future booking.

THE BOOKING OF YOUR BIGWOODS HUNT WILL NOT BE FINALIZED UNTIL THE APPROPRIATE DEPOSIT(S) IS RECEIVED.

ALERT!!!!! DEER STANDS ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE OWL OUTHOUSES!!!!!!!!!!!!

And so dear hunters please close the windows when you leave your stand. It takes about 2 days for owls to set up shop in an open deer stand. Heath and Nicky have told me that getting owl poop and its stench out of deer stands is their least favorite  BigWoods chore. In order to get the stands even close to clean, we have to rip the carpet out. You should know that the death penalty is legal and often applied as country justice in Texas!

So, in other words, if you don’t want to suffer the fate of the Mel Gibson character @ the end of BRAVEHEART  puleeze close the windows when you leave your stand. Also, do not remove the windows, ever, from their frames as they seem to get broken and the owls seem to have hidden all the replacement parts.
